Some of the students in our school have a lot of stressors in the outside world and when they come to school it is really easy to lose their cool. Giving them an an environment where they are able to use different sensory materials to learn how to manage their own emotional needs has been very successful. Teaching students the responsibility to learn how to gather their thoughts and calm down before reacting to a situation is a life skill that is guided and scaffolded with our kindergarten students. Providing bean bag chairs and manipulatives that are also educational allow for students to sit in a designated area and take chill (sensory) breaks. Many students benefit from these planned (and unplanned) child (sensory) breaks. This sensory friendly environment will give students who don’t know how to self-regulate their behaviors a place to calm down and think before they act. This room will be available for all of our students and as the year goes on we will hope to add additionally items such as a sound machine, additional seating and sound items.
