    Funded Apr 12, 2017

Thank you so much for your generous donations! It is a challenge to help ensure that my students have access to the many resources needed on a daily basis. Your donation has helped make a significant impact on our learning environment knowing we will now have the technology needed moving forward. My students and I are so grateful for your commitment to our learning. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you!”

    With gratitude,

  • Connecting Science and Literacy

    Funded Dec 20, 2016

This letter serves as just a small token of the appreciation shared by myself and my students for your generous donation. We are reading the novel Life As We Knew It and enjoying unpacking the scientific concepts within the book, as well as the contextual themes such as sacrifice and an inherent desire for survival.

My students often feel disconnected to topics in Earth Science class and I am always challenging myself to find ways of relating the content to our everyday lives. This novel helps engender discussions about the interconnectedness of our physical environment and the impact it has on every aspect of society. As my students consider how their own lives might change if natural disasters impact their ability to access food, water, and other resources, they grow to understand how important it is maintain the delicate balance between our planet and ourselves.

Without donors like you, my students would not have had access to this novel and I am truly grateful for your contribution to my classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Owens

I am always looking for ways to both bring literacy skills and practice into my science classroom, as well as connecting broad concepts to my students' personal life experiences. 'Life As We Knew It' is a young adult novel that explores what happens to an ordinary family in a normal American town when their world changes forever. An asteroid hits the moon, knocking it into a closer orbit. This causes all kinds of environmental disasters that bring the world to a halt. Without shops, food, electricity, heat and water, the main character and her family face problems together and struggle to survive. I will be working collaboratively with the English teacher, employing a cross-curricular approach to this project. As our students read Life As We Knew It they will work through literary elements in their English class, while discussing the scientific concepts in my class. For their culminating project they will have a choice of three projects to complete, including journal entries from the main character's perspective, designing a disaster plan, or compiling a research presentation on three natural hazards. This varied approach will allow our students to express their understanding of the novel and the scientific topics within it in the way that best matches their learning styles.
