My students are growing up speaking Spanish at home, and learning both Spanish and English at school. While working on language skills, they need to keep learning grade-level math concepts, and let's face it, math is, pretty much, a different language. So, how does that happen in my class? Enter Math block! During Math block, students have 90 minutes of differentiated math instruction in whole group, small group, and independent practice. I teach a concept in a short whole group lesson, and then students work on that concept independently or in small groups. Students struggling with math will come to small group, with me at my teacher table. While at the table, I give these students extra support with engaging math manipulatives, white boards, games, and anything that helps them better understand math. The materials requested in this proposal are from Lakeshore Learning, and they are the best in the business. Students love the colorful materials and engaging problems. The students that leave my group, then take the materials to practice independently. I don't have to worry about them being off-task, because they love Lakeshore games, and they don't even know just how much they're learning!
