My students range in reading ability from a 1st grade level, on grade level (5th grade) to above grade level. This project not only peaks student interest but helps me reach every type of reader in my classroom. It will allow me to give them background information where they might not have any experience otherwise. For example, there are so many kids that have never been to the beach or have seen seashells in real life, reading about it, in conjunction with some hands-on materials can help create a great mental image. I strongly believe that poor readers often lack the access to reading material that is meaningful to them. If we can make them interested in the book, they are more likely to reread it on their own. Hence, I picked a wide variety of books based on science related topics including African American scientist which has been my hardest to reach audience.
