By reading the novel Ashes of Roses by Mary Jane Auch, students will be able to relate to people of the past and gain perspective on the lives of immigrants during the industrial revolution. Instead of just reading about the horrific triangle shirtwaist factory fire of 1911 from a textbook, they will be able to understand it from a more personal first hand perspective that is true to the time period even though it is fictional. Not only will this novel help to create real life connections for students based on this historical tragedy, but it will serve to connect students to the chemistry of fire and fire related tragedies that still affect people today, especially in California (Ghost Ship Fire in Oakland and forest fires throughout California). This integrated unit will teach our students about how tragedies are almost always preventable through education and fair law enforcement. Unfortunately, changes in laws and the enforcement of laws doesn't always happen until their is a tragedy. It will help students to understand the importance of being educated and working to make positive changes in their communities in order to protect the rights of the people.
