I recently began teaching a media course in a school which hadn't before offered any technology instruction. While my students are learning a brand new subject, the resources I have for instruction are quite far from new. The computer lab, which has become my classroom, was previously used to store old curriculum materials, old picture books, a variety of broken technology parts, and other unwanted materials. For example, the projector I am using to model computer skills for students during instruction requires an adapter to connect to my computer. It's materials like this that add up quickly when trying to plan instruction and classroom routines for grades pre-kindergarten through 8th! I have embraced the challenge to transform an old, dusty, storage room into a classroom space that feels welcoming and encouraging to a variety of students who come to learn each day. Basic materials like expo markers for writing instructions on the white board or a working pencil sharpener allows students to participate in learning without thinking about logistical tasks. The items requested will help me immensely in making my classroom more conducive for student learning!
