One of the first things I realized about my students during my first year of teaching is how the concept of organization is lost on 12 and 13 year olds. A solution to this problem is to provide each of my students with a 1 ½ inch binder and a set of dividers so that they can organize their work in a compact space that can be stored in my classroom and is easily accessible. The dividers will allow them to learn how to better organize their work. By implementing a binder system in my classroom, my students will practice and gain the critical skill of organization. I teach a small number of students with IEP’s and special needs. One of the hardest things to watch is them struggling to interact with a text. To help support my exceptional learners, I need one iPad. This iPad (and the utilization of apps and programs such as eReading, Lexia and Study Island) will allow my students, who are on elementary school reading levels, to enhance their literacy skills during independent practice. I want to be able to expose my students not only to different types of technology, but how to use technology as an effective learning tool. I need 70 copies of The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. After winter break, my students are going to begin reading logs centering around this novel. Each student will receive a copy of the novel, along with a gallon zip lock bag to keep it in. Their homework will center around reading the novel, doing activities with it to support learning across the curriculum and build their reading stamina.
