Watercolor Color Theory!
Funded Oct 4, 2023Thank you for giving me the help I needed to teach my students all about color theory. My students have learned a new skill, how to paint using watercolors. They created several projects with this new skill, but the Color Wheel was the start. They had a blast mixing primary colors to make secondary and tertiary colors. The paper, paints, punchers, and color wheels were key for completing our first project.
Hearing the oohs and ahhs of my students is an unexplainable feeling of gratefulness. The materials arrived on separate days and it was great to see how excited my students were when they saw all the supplies that arrived just for them. They are so grateful for the materials nothing was taken for granted.
Students now have the foundation of color theory and our next projects will expand on that. Textures is a lesson I love to teach so the masking tape and rubber cement are two types of resistors my students will be learning about as well as glazing and stippling to name a few. The paints and brushes will help my students create galaxies, planets, still lives, and abstract works of art. Your donations have helped me spread the joy of art in painting so thank you very much.”

This classroom project was brought to life by The DonorsChoose Community and 10 other donors.Blending Tools for Young Artists.
Funded Sep 2, 2017My students were introduced to the concept of 'value', a range of colors from light to dark, and the materials arrived just in time for them to begin a value-related project. My seventh grade artists used the materials to make partial-portraits using value and my sixth grade artists used them to make a sphere using value. Student artists used the stencils and rulers to create the circles and to draw a straight line across their work. Each student also did preliminary work using the materials before they worked on the final project. They loved using the kneaded erasers and all of the different pencils.
When the materials arrived, my sixth graders were the ones who opened the boxes and they were so happy that they cheered for all of the new materials. Some of my students had never seen nor used kneaded erasers so they played with them as they created all the values on their practice sheets.
The next steps my seventh graders will take is to create a complete portrait instead of a partial one. My sixth graders will do a portrait using a grid system so that they can put the rulers to good use. We are very grateful for all your wonderful donations! Without them, my students would not be able to learn the parts of a sphere or know new terms, such as tortillion (blending tool) and chamois (cloth tool for blending).”

What Is ART Without Paint?
Funded Feb 4, 2017On behalf of the students of Sal Castro Middle School and myself, I would like to thank you for your generous donation.
Your donation provided much needed art supplies to children in need of expressing themselves creatively. With these supplies, my art classes designed their own color wheels and I was very fortunate to receive the paint just in time for them to begin their first paint project. Students learned how to mix paint and created secondary and tertiary colors from their primary colors. The palettes helped for mixing and and storing extra paint and the posters were a great resource for the use of brushes and tools. We have created various paintings since, including value studies, a monochromatic cube, a self-portrait, a missing piece project, and we are currently working on abstract painting inspired by Jackson Pollock and Vasily Kandinsky. These materials made all of these projects possible!
The impact that these materials have given my students is immeasurable. I think back to when my students first saw the paint and I noticed they were so happy and grateful. I could see a change in their behavior. One of my students said, "I'm painting my soul!" as she splattered paint on her canvas.
Our next step as a classroom is to make masks out of paper mache and paint them with our new materials, just in time for the school's Open House event. With the art supplies you provided, these artists are well on their way to creating incredible masterpieces!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Madera
