My kids learn best when they read material that is relevant to them. Our texts can be a little dry. A lot of times they doodle on them rather than read the textbook. They often remark, "Why are we reading this? This has nothing to do with me." Monster: The Autobiography of an L.A. Gang Member is an autobiography that will full engage my students. I plan on have my students read the book and I will teach the CA common Core standards by relating it back to the text. The story is one of redemption and how the author turned his life around. My students would be able to relate to this text.
