Funded Oct 22, 2020Thank you all so very much for your generous donation of books to our classroom!
Each week, our classroom reads a focus book from a program titled, "Rooted in Reading." The books that we read together in class are chosen for many reasons. Many of the books are Caldecott Award winners, have an amazing message, or tie in well with the season of the year. All of the books are used to teach a reading skill. For example, the book titled, "Substitute Creacher," taught students a lesson about character- antibullying, but also focused on the reading skill foreshadowing. This book also had a Halloween theme that was illustrated through the story as well as through the illustrations. Therefore, this book was an October book selection. Currently, we are reading a story titled, "Turkey Bowl." "Turkey Bowl" is a book that showcases a Thanksgiving theme and focuses on the reading skill of character traits. The book describes a family's Thanksgiving tradition of playing football each year. This theme allowed us tie in with football- a favorite- and we used that theme to incorporate some nonfiction reading. That is another wonderful feature of our reading program, each fiction book is paired with nonfiction writing as well.
My students and I are all enjoying these amazing books and thank you from the bottom of our hearts!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Neil
