  • The Handmaid's Tale Unit in Women's Voices/Gender Studies Class

    Funded Nov 28, 2017

I am so excited to have copies of The Handmaid’s Tale for each of my students this year. They love writing directly in their their books and they are thrilled that they will be able to keep their texts after our unit, and add them to their personal libraries.”

    With gratitude,

    Teacher H.

  • Individual Copies of Course Text

    Funded Mar 29, 2017

Your donation of books was incredibly impactful for my students. We've been learning about gender roles and stereotypes and how to read through a gender lens, so having Kevin Powell's memoir to enhance our learning of these topics has been indescribably helpful; the students are deeply engaged in the text and we have had many seminar discussions using it as a focus point (see photos included of our classroom discussions).

In my classroom, reading is a social endeavor. Since many of my students are reading below grade level, we utilize group readings or partner readings several times per week. Further, students need books that speak to their interests. Your book donation is their favorite text we have read thus far. The boys in my class, who typically claim they "I don't like to read" are devouring this memoir and finding it connects to their lives in the South Bronx.

We are so appreciative of your donation. Thank you times a million!”

    With gratitude,

    Teacher H.

This classroom project was brought to life by Aspect Ventures and one other donor.
My students are energetic readers, and they love to make notes in the books they read. My students have worked so incredibly hard in the first part of our course so, I would love to give them each their own copy of our core text for unit three in Gender Studies. I know they will love this book and cherish it in their personal libraries for years to come. I know owning this book, The Education of Kevin Powell:A Boy's Journey into Manhhod, would mean a lot to each of my students, and being able to write in the book as they read would further enhance their reading and learning experience. Please help my students become the best readers they can be by funding this project for our class.
