Osmo Genius Kits for My Geniuses
Funded Dec 31, 2016Thank you so much for donating to our Osmo project! My students have loved this new addition to our classroom. Our Osmos have changed the way students interact our iPads. Osmo time is usually a favorite part of the day. We use five Osmo apps: Tangrams, Words, Numbers, Newton, and Masterpiece.
In Tangrams, students use seven shape pieces to solve puzzles that appear on the iPad screen. Puzzles range from easy to difficult. Each student has their own Osmo profile, so their progress is tracked from session to session. Working with the Tangram app helps develop problem solving and logical thinking skills. In addition it helps students develop visual-spatial awareness.
I upload our spelling lists to Words each week. Their words appear one at a time on the iPad screen, with some of the letters missing. Using letter tiles, students try to figure out the missing letters (kind of like the game Hangman). Students can race against a classmate or play on their own. There are also hundreds of uploaded word puzzles in the Osmo Words data base. Students have identified states on a map and solved riddles during Words time.
Numbers focuses on addition, subtraction, and multiplication skills. Since multiplication is a big part of our 3rd grade curriculum, we spend most of our Numbers time focusing on it. Students try to free underwater treasures, while figuring out the factors of different numbers. It is a fun, hands-on way to practice multiplication skills.
Students usually get to work with Masterpiece and Newton at the end of the week. Masterpiece is like a digital tracing paper. Students create their own artwork, while watching the screen as they draw on paper. Newton brings physics to my 3rd grade classroom. Students use objects or drawings to redirect balls falling on the screen. They earn points and pass to new levels as they hit different targets.
Our Osmo Genius kits have opened a whole new world on our iPads for my students. Thank you for opening this world for them!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Ringo
