My school provides each math teacher with 10 calculators for 36 students. That leaves 26 students to go without a calculator, or to purchase one themselves. Most families cannot afford a decent calculator which makes the students work more difficult at times. With Common Core being implemented, the standards have been changed and students need calculators now more than ever. If each student was able to have a calculator, there would be fewer arithmetic errors and problems would be able to be solved much faster. Along with the new Common Core curriculum, students are now solving real world problems with mathematics. In my classroom, we treat these problems as if we were actually solving them outside the classroom. There is no room for error when building a bridge! Engineers and mathematicians use calculators, so all my students should have the right to feel like a mathematician, even down to having a calculator.
