During the fall semester, my in-class students collect water samples from local streams and beaches and perform various water quality analyses, in lab groups. However, every year, a number of my students go home to Mexico from Thanksgiving into the new year and therefore lose out on valuable lab skills, including data collection, analysis, graphing, and writing conclusions.
In this way, my students whose families leave the country at the end of each calendar year will be able to take portable water quality kits with them and keep up with the class curriculum. The student data is graphed and compared. Then, conclusions will be written up. The final product for each consecutive lab builds from a simple conclusion paragraph into a full-fledged formal lab report.
