The ability to shift, swivel and get up quickly while working gives a different "feel", like the difference between wearing slippers or tennis shoes all day- the difference between lethargy and energy. I want my students to have the opportunity to have a working environment that feels specially tailored for them and their productivity. Students spend the majority of their day sitting in hard chairs, pushed in, so their laps are under their desks. To get out of their desks, chairs must be scooted back, then pushed in. Classroom space is limited and the result is little movement or flexible arranging of students. The twenty-seven wobble chairs in this project would allow students to sit, turn, and easily move from sitting to standing. Adding a kinesthetic component to the classroom setting helps to meet the needs of students who learn best when they are able to move. Retention is increased when there is an element of fun, and these seats are fun (without being distracting). The seats could be grouped in any configuration very quickly to accommodate the creativity of our students. I believe this seating will energize students working in this work space. When student groups work on research or mathematics projects and need to be using technology and planning together, students can efficiently move the seats to accommodate their purposes. As middle school students engage in small group, student led vocabulary-in-context work, they like to "get comfortable" and these seats will allow for comfort and "on the edge of your seat feeling".
