All of my students want to learn how to play the drum set, an integral part of the steel band. At the core of the "engine room", the drum set is used to direct the band, communicating the tempo, style, feel, and cues that a band needs to successfully navigate through the form of a chart, or piece of music. The ride cymbal is a necessary part of the drum set! Without it, student drummers are less effective at communicating to the rest of the band all of the necessary information to make great music! The ride cymbal communicates the tempo, and supports that role in the loudest sections of each piece. Once I have the cymbal, all student drummers will have a chance to contribute to the music in the way it was intended, and should be heard.
