Pottery is truly a magical experience. Clay in general is fun but throwing clay on a pottery wheel changes the way an artist views creativity and life. Having pottery wheels available to my students will allow them to learn how things are made, create with their own hands, and learn how to be still, firm, and gentle with clay. I say "clay is magical" because the lessons a student learns through wheel throwing are life-long lessons that apply to all areas of life, such as, failure, perseverance, reconstructing life, being careful with their hands and bodies, and creating intentional art that tells their story. My students want pottery wheels. I have over a hundred signatures of students that WANT to keep learning about clay. This project will touch the lives of all students who walk through the halls of Princeton and choose to take an art class. My favorite thing about being a ceramics teacher is watching my sweet kids jump for joy when they see their ceramic piece come out of the kiln! They LOVE being able to use their artwork and bring beauty to a functional cup and plate. My students take great pride in their work, as they should! I want to create more opportunities for them to keep growing as artists and humans. Pottery Wheels will challenge them, grow them, and allow them the chance to learn a peaceful hobby that isn't financially accessible to many people, especially not young high schoolers! Thank you for reading this and even considering!
