Gamify Learning
Funded Aug 31, 2022Often, students are apathetic about schoolwork, but when it is disguised as "playing games," their attitudes improve significantly! My students have been excited about creating stories, problem-solving, and thinking outside the box with the new resources we received through Donors Choose. When the bell rang to go to the next class, they did not want to leave.
When the students first saw the materials as we unpacked the box, their faces lit up. They were surprised when they saw the box was full of games for them to enjoy together. Seeing the students interact with each other in a relaxed, fun setting was fascinating. Even the quiet students were laughing and talking!
We will continue using these games to enrich student learning throughout the spring semester. Thank you for supporting teachers and students through your generous donations.”

Funded May 24, 2021My eighth-grade students enjoyed exploring the variety of WWII historical fiction books provided by your generous gift with a "book tasting." The students then selected the titles that looked most interesting to them, and book clubs were formed. The book clubs met each Monday for four weeks so students could talk about what they read. The discussions focused on character choices during this difficult time in history as well as themes that were developed throughout the novels. These novels allowed students to better understand what life in Europe was like and what families experienced and sacrificed during the Nazi reign.
As students met with their small groups, the text was enriched by their conversations, and the discussions often led to topics that students wanted to research further. As students reflected on the books they read, most enjoyed the experience and recommended their book for next year's students. After reading The Nightingale, one student wrote, "THIS BOOK IS AMAZING, it was just a really enjoyable book with lovable characters. It truly is a page-turner and I wanted to stay up as long as I could to read over and over again. So great!!!!"
Because of your donation, students were able to connect to the characters and develop empathy and understanding of those who experienced the cataclysmic events of WWII. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to read these impactful historical-fiction novels.”

Funded Oct 2, 2009What a blessing it has been this past month to see so many of my reluctant readers enjoying a book! I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for your generous donation of eight digital Playaway units. My students are reading their books like crazy since we received your box of reading resources.
The Playaways that we received were originally intended to help out our reluctant readers. However, students from every reading level are taking advantage of--in their words--"really cool technology." Students can tune out the world while they read along with the narrated version of eight different books.
To be honest, these resources are in such high demand that I have made a waiting list for every Playaway. They are extremely popular with the students.
Thank you again for this great gift. My students and I both thank you!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Scotten
