Fighting Stereotypes Through Fashion
Funded Jan 16, 2020As many of us have learned throughout our lives, stereotypes are taught and kids often learn about them as they listen to people passing judgment. By being able to use the Cricut machine, students are able to more easily express themselves through our 8th Grade Expedition project which uses fashion to come up with slogans that combat common stereotypes they've come in contact with. many of them are very into fashion and crafting, so the Cricut machine allows them to bring their visions to the next level.
Many students had yet to hear of the machine, and when I explained it's versatility, they were shocked and interested. Many of our more artistic students immediately started brainstorming ideas on how to best use it. Understandably, some of the less creative students seem overwhelmed, but enjoyed a demonstration by the teacher.
Now, while students began to map out and plan their slogans, some even attempting to work with the machine, we unfortunately did not get to complete work before school was closed down. However, the project is a annual project the students partake in as part of an interdisciplinary study on Social Identity. Students were proud of the work they did identifying stereotypes and coming up with catchy slogans to counter-act them. Those who completed shirts on the machine felt empowered by the professional quality, and wore them proudly.”
