The 8th grade students at my school spend two months each spring learning about the different aspects of meteorology. We study the atmosphere, wind patterns, air movement, the water cycle along with various extreme weather events. The spring is an exciting time to study the weather as we can observe actual examples of weather systems on a daily basis. Our school currently does not have a working weather station nor the budget to purchase one. Our students would benefit greatly from a Vantage Vue system with various sensors and data collectors. Our students could integrate this data into our inquiry labs and begin to make connections to real world events and weather prediction models. Having this technology would enable our students to have hands on access to weather monitoring sensors and data collection techniques that they would utilize while monitoring the atmospheric conditions right at our school! With this station our lesson plans could be expanded and students could even design their own inquiry based investigations. All of our 285 students would benefit and we could once again invigorate our meteorology curriculum.
