Working in the inner city, we have no budget to advance our programs and make the curriculum as effective as possible. These students from grades 3-8 will start working with the ukuleles and learn as a class and as individuals how to recreate music already written, but also create new music. Composition will be put to life with the ukuleles and students will have concrete examples of the music they are creating in class. The projects we will explore with the ukuleles will not only help their music skills expand, but we will work on incorporating literacy and science. Using the ukuleles as tools to understand how sound is made and to write their own lyrics and stories set to music will inspire the students to appreciate and create music for the rest of their lives.
