Many of my students who come from low income families cannot afford to buy backpacks big enough to fit their homework folders. When a child's backpack is too small, his/her self-esteem is impacted because the folders are too big and they struggle to zip their backpacks. My wish is to be able to purchase backpacks for each of my kindergarteners that are big enough to hold their folders and school supplies. My low income students long for and deserve all the essential supplies they need to be successful in school. During the first week of school, my students learn how to organize their backpacks and folders. The folders are for their homework and other important papers to give to their parents. Students learn the routines of turning in their papers, putting away their backpacks in their cubbies, and receiving homework and storing it in their backpacks at the end of the day to take home. Although this sounds like a simple task, to a kindergartener, this is a skill that has to be taught and practiced. I am also requesting pencils, crayons, and glue sticks which are essential for completing their homework, as well as a pencil box to store their supplies. I would like each student to have whiteboards and dry erase markers which will be used to practice skills at home, without the need for parents to buy paper. The backpacks and school supplies I am requesting are essential to the academic success of my students. Because this is the first year of their education, establishing good organizational skills is the first step towards developing important lifelong habits. With this project, my students will have the supplies they need to be joyful learners.
