How can we keep students engaged without materials to do so? Project Based Learning is the best way to enrich the fifth grade Social Studies and Science Curriculum. Students are posed with real-world problems within the context of the current unit of study. My students become engrossed in the real world problems posed to them, and work in research teams to create solutions. Project Based Learning allows for all students to share their strengths within a group and learn from their peers. The students in my class excel at using technology, but have no way to print out materials necessary to complete their research and create final presentations. Most projects are mixed media, so they involve various visual components. Currently, students must print at home or pay to do so at the public library. The printer and scanner will be used by my students to support their research teams. It will be used to print research materials, embed hand drawn items with digitally created items, and allow for color in everything they do.
