  • A Clean Classroom Leads to Better Student Performance!

    Funded Feb 5, 2018

My students and I can't thank you enough for thinking of us and donating to our project. When I told the students the project got funded, they were so excited and could not wait for the packages to arrive. When the day came and all of the supplies were here I brought the boxes into the classroom and they cheered! They helped me unpack everything and put the supplies away!

Every week we have our cleaning day, which is usually on Thursdays. The students look forward to it always, and remind me in the morning that the day is here. They each have a job for cleaning and are always responsible with their jobs and willing to do them! They also are helping each other by showing them how they do their jobs with cleaning. It has improved on their social skills, as well as their attendance. I have even reached out to their families about our Cleaning Thursdays and many of them were impressed that they were able to do all these cleaning responsibilities in school! They have them starting to take on more responsibilities now at home.

From here, we are learning about other ways we can make a bigger impact in cleaning our Earth. We are learning about how we can recycle, as well as other ways we can each take on bigger and better responsibilities to take care of our planet. Not only do we need to keep a clean classroom, we need to make a cleaner Earth! The little steps can make the biggest impact! You all have given my students the opportunity to grow in many ways thanks to this donation. We appreciate your kindness!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Restivo

  • READING Can Change Your Life!

    Funded Dec 30, 2016

Thank you so much for your generous donations! Without your kindness and support my students would continue to be struggling with finding adequate resources to help them with their reading skills. As soon as the students came into the classroom the day after the books were delivered, they immediately saw their new leveled book library. They were eager to start using it. You have made reading fun for them again! I have already seen a lot of improvement in their reading skills, especially with the students who had only pre-reading skills. The students are mostly on different levels of reading, but those who are on a Level A (the beginning of the leveled books) are excited to be able to join their peers in reading. They tell each other to listen to them read and they get excited when they recognize words and word patterns in a story. Their reading comprehension skills have improved as well, because they are understanding what they are reading using the books that correlate with their level of reading. When they first explored the library, I let them look at any level book so that they can see what they will read in the future. Because of that, the students have set goals for themselves to get to the book that they first saw and loved. Words cannot express how thankful I am and how thankful the students are for giving them the inspiration and encouragement to read. Once again, thank you so much for your help!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Restivo

My students need leveled books to increase their literacy skills. As a special educator, we have to differentiate instruction, and all the students are reading at different reading levels. If their literacy skills increase, the students will be able to move on to less restrictive environments within the education system. Once they become fluent readers they will be able to teach themselves and others! Unfortunately, our resources are scarce and it is best for children to read books that are paired to their independent and instructional levels of teaching to help them become stronger in building their reading fluency and reading comprehension. Reading is FUNdamental, develops our minds, helps us to discover new things, and develops our imaginations! Having leveled books and a storage cart in our classroom will not only encourage the children to read more and gain a love for reading because they will have texts that are more appropriate to their reading level.
