More than anything, our students need laptops. Many of our students don't have computers or internet at home, and our school has very limited technology resources, since we are part of the very under-funded Baltimore public school system. Since our high school students are completing college-level work, they need laptops to complete writing assignments successfully and with pride in their work. They also need them for doing research and reading (they can get many free e-books online and teachers can also share pdfs with them). As they apply to colleges, they need laptops to fill out applications, research schools, and write their college essays. Even if they don't have internet at home, students can take their laptops to the library or places where they can get free wifi. When I think about the "link" that our students need to succeed, it is definitely laptops! What I'm proposing is to eventually raise enough money to get laptops for every one of our 50 "Year 2" (12th grade) students to borrow during the year and take home with them as they need it. Eventually I'd like to raise enough money for each of our students -- in all grades -- to be able to borrow a laptop when they need one.
