My students have decided to make a flower garden growing native wildflowers that not only attract butterflies but aid in removing lead from the soil. We began the garden this year with a few old props tools we borrowed from the theater teacher. We would love to have tools and soil (as we have to discard the first 3 inches of soil at school before we can plant, due to lead) and a small rain barrel (as we have no source of water outside the school). We have a whole crew of students who are dedicated to making this garden something special at our school. Our wildflower garden is a way students can feel empowered to do something positive and create positive change in their lives. The students would like to expand the garden next year to include growing vegetables that they would like to sell at our local farmers market to raise money for the food pantry in town. They are very excited to learn gardening and how to run a small business! I'm thrilled to watch them take hold of this real-world learning experience and make the most of it.
