Imagine five and six year old children having some of their first experiences in the classroom. They are ready and excited to learn. They want to touch, do, see and feel everything. I teach in a Title I school. The students that I serve are from various backgrounds some of the students live in single-parent homes, some are below poverty level, and we have a high population of English language learners.
Flexible seating is a way to help students focus. Many of these students do not have knowledge of how to use their excess energy in a way that is constructive. By utilizing flexible seating options the students will learn in the best positive environment.
Because of the age group, much of our learning does not follow a traditional sitting at a desk with a traditional chair. The students work with their hands on materials, we use cooperative learning strategies in Language Arts, Math, and Science centers. In addition, working in groups during STEM are several of the learning opportunities that occur within my classroom. By changing the ability to learn in different ways I can greatly impact a child's success over the content being taught. By providing several types of seating, the students will be able to engage while they are actively learning and moving. Balance balls, floor seating, and stools will help those students who struggle with sitting still in order to concentrate. The floor cushions will allow my students to work within their own personal space while still being able to collaborate with their peers.
I want my students to be inspired to know they will be the future scientists, technology based critical thinkers, and mathematicians in our ever changing world.
