A Christmas Carol for All—Bringing a Community Together!
Funded Dec 7, 2017The students at MS 577 really enjoyed reading this classic tale. It exposed the children to an amazing author, Charles Dickens who first published this book in 1843. The timeless story of Ebenezer Scrooge, an elderly miser who was visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come gave my students a lot to talk about, the discussions were rich. Students related to the novel and many examined their own lives carefully wondering if they were thankful and grateful for the many things they had.”

"12 Angry Men"- America Struggles.
Funded Feb 23, 2017Thank you for your generous donation to our school. The students really enjoyed reading "12 Angry Men". We read the book and acted out the play. Students had rich discussions about democracy and the judicial system in the United States.
This donation really helped to enrich the curriculum. I found that reluctant readers were drawn to this play because they actively participated in reading with their classmates and had rich discussions about the evolution of the characters and the American Justice system.
I look forward to reading more novels/plays like this giving children exposure to various genres and themes about society.”

The Red Pyramid
Funded Nov 16, 2016First a little background on the novel...Since their mother's death, Carter and Sadie have become near strangers. While Sadie has lived with her grandparents in London, her brother has traveled the world with their father, the brilliant Egyptologist, Dr. Julius Kane.
One night, Dr. Kane brings the siblings together for a "research experiment" at the British Museum, where he hopes to set things right for his family. Instead, he unleashes the Egyptian god Set, who banishes him to oblivion and forces the children to flee for their lives.
Soon, Sadie and Carter discover that the gods of Egypt are waking, and the worst of them–Set–has his sights on the Kanes. To stop him, the siblings embark on a dangerous journey across the globe–a quest that brings them ever closer to the truth about their family, and their links to a secret order that has existed since the time of the pharaohs.
The students really enjoyed reading this novel and discussing it weekly in their Literature Circles (book clubs). They feverishly worked together each week to peel away the different aspects of the novel such as the theme, characters and setting. This genre has been very popular with the students, so we will continue reading this type of literature. It also pairs well with the 6th grade Social Studies curriculum which is an ideal way for students to learn across multiple subjects.
Both my students and myself thank you very much for your continued support for MS 577.”
