Filling in the gaps for students can be very difficult in reading. Students often fall behind early and can be one to two grade levels behind by the time they get to second grade. When reading gets too difficult, behavior problems often occur because students are frustrated, disappointed and embarrassed by their reading level. I would love to incorporate Scholastic News weekly readers in my classroom to offer high-interest reading material that pertain to Science and Math. This year our school decided to departmentalize all grade levels. While I looped up with my class, I am only teaching them Math and Science. I still work with my low students for 45 minutes a day during our Reading intervention block. These weekly readers will not only provide interest but also authentic reading which my students lack in their homes. I am also requesting a carpet for my classroom where we can gather to partner read, play games, write, number talks (mental math – whole group) and listen to others read to them.
