  • Students as Engineers: The Materials for Hands-on STEM Projects

    Funded Dec 28, 2021

These projects have made a huge difference in building student excitement and engagement around science. I use these projects when we change groups at the start of each marking period to give students the opportunity to work collaboratively with their new teammates. Students are always SO EXCITED when they see that we're doing one of these projects, and also so proud to bring them home. These projects have enabled students to learn about the engineering process and mechanics while at the same time building their teamwork skills. These were some of mine and my students favorite projects, and I can't wait to return to them this year! Thank you so much for supporting public education in Oakland and making these projects possible for my students.”

  • Students as Engineers: The Materials for Hands-on STEM Projects

    Funded Dec 20, 2021

Teaching in-person post-shelter in place was the most difficult year of teaching I have experienced. These projects made a huge difference in building student excitement and engagement around science. Students were SO excited when they saw the materials to make these projects, and these projects enabled them to learn about the engineering process, mechanics, and solving design challenges while at the same time building their teamwork and social skills -- skills that were very difficult to develop during virtual learning. These were some of mine and my students favorite projects, and I can't wait to return to them this year!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Young

  • Incentives for Newcomer Scientists: Colored Pencils and Audobon Birds

    Funded Jan 1, 2021

Thank you so much for your incredibly generous donations that actually made distance learning FUN last year. Delivering science kits to my students was one of the highlights of distance learning, and receiving their own quality colored pencils were THE highlight of the deliveries - these colored pencils were specifically requested by students when I asked about what their prizes should be for their Class Dojo participation points, and they were something that students had been excitedly asking about.

Students used these colored pencils in their science/nature journals - to draw material inventories, models of and blueprints for the robots they made, and to sketch nature observations, of the mushrooms they grow and caterpillars they raised - I loved receiving pictures of their drawings through WhatsApp. Because of distance learning and because they each had their own personal set, they also got to use these pencils for their own artwork at home. Having quality art materials makes a world of difference in science class and in student artwork -- thank you for supporting my students honoring their work, and giving them quality materials of their own.”
