  • Food to Fuel Our Students

    Funded Aug 21, 2022

Thank you for supporting my students in one of the most basic ways. Students need fuel to perform at high levels, and our students strive to perform at the highest possible levels. Your donation has allowed me to purchase high-quality snacks that the students can grab as they go from one class to another.

Additionally, these snacks have helped me build relationships with my students. As an assistant principal new to this campus, I did not know any of the students at the start of the year. Now I have students regularly coming to my office asking if they can grab a snack and talking to me about their day, club, sport, etc.

I hope that once students feel comfortable around me, they will feel they can come to me with any problem, big or small. I know food may seem simple to provide to kids and superficial when the basis of an interaction, but it has had a significant impact. Maslow's hierarchy of needs tells us that our other needs can't be met until our basic needs are met, and I want my students' needs to be met. Thank you for helping with this.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Cherry

  • At-Home Book Studies for Honors Science Classes

    Funded Apr 14, 2020

With things being so hectic these days, it is nice to be able to have times where we can come together to talk about a book. This is something new for my class, and while there are struggles, I think that the students are growing to like the Friday book chats we have.

I am using The Hidden Life of Trees in my freshman-level Environmental Systems class. I am working to find a system that works for everyone, but essentially, I am assigning a chapter or two at a time and when we have a class together every other Friday, we talk about what we've read, using the BookRags material.

I was disappointed not to be teaching Anatomy and Physiology this year, but the teacher who is was excited to have the copies of Stiff and will be using this resource in her class throughout the year. Thanks again!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Cherry

  • Bring on the Bees

    Funded Feb 13, 2020

We are so excited to get our bees and get this going on our campus. We have so many staff members and students already interested in our honeybee journey and we know there will be loads of learning with this, thanks to you. Thank you so much for your support!”

  • Flight Of The Honeybee...To East Austin

    Funded Sep 30, 2018

We are so excited to have the Beepod Beekeeping System on our campus! We are still in the process of receiving parts and assembling the entire system, but the student excitement for what is to come is high. We hope to have our AP Environmental Science classes finish researching where on campus to place the Beepod by the end of this semester. There are many regulations for having bees on campus and there are specific things that the bees require. Researching both of these things has been valuable to their learning.

Once the Beepod is placed and we have a sufficient understanding of the specifics of keeping bees, we can start the process for ordering bees and starting our hive. To help us prepare we have signed up for a beekeeping course with a local partner - the Sustainable Food Center. We are taking a handful of underclassman along with our AP kids so that they can be on the "Bee Team" in the years to come. We have a lot of interest in this from the underclassman and are working on sorting applications.

Though this is quite a process, we look forward to eventually having an established hive on our campus so that we can study the bees from multiple content points of view. We will also collect honey in the future and allow our students to take some home, as they currently do with our chicken eggs. Thank you so much for helping us to bring this system that will teach so many different things to our campus!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Cherry

  • I'm Head(phones) Over Heels for These!

    Funded Nov 2, 2017

I want to thank you again for your generous donation to my project and to explain how your donation is benefiting my students. Headphones are an everyday accessory that most people have access to - They allow us to temporarily step away from our surrounding environment and focus on music, books, podcasts, and other audio we love, independently. The reason that headphones are so useful in the classroom is directly connected to why we love them to begin with - they allow students to block out surrounding stimuli and focus on the work they need to do. There are students who struggle with focusing on the work in front of them when they can hear their peers engaging in other conversations, both content related and not.

Although some students do have their own set of earbuds, introducing these brand new headphones to my classes proved very exciting for those who do not carry their own pair. We had been using some mostly-broken sets left over from the 90's and when it came time to do an activity that required them, students slowly made their way to the back to get a pair. Now when I say headphones are needed for an activity, students are quick to jump up and claim a pair of the brand new headphones that they really enjoy wearing.

While all students can benefit from the headphones and seem to appreciate them, I have a handful of students who are showing real, long-term benefits. Introverted students are often overlooked in the classroom because of their quietness. They are no less capable and intelligent as their peers, just not as apt to vocalize their knowledge. I have noticed these students really warming to the activities that allow them to demonstrate their knowledge without requiring direct interaction with their peers. Allowing them to do activities on the computer helps them to better communicate their understanding and boost their confidence. I can also introduce activities that require collaboration in a digital platform and they end up working on their team work skills. It is a win win.

Please know that your donation is making a very real difference in the learning of many of my students. I am beyond thankful for your help in making this wish a reality.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Cherry
