Reading a novel for enjoyment in high school is a rarity, but since implementing Reading Day once a week, my students have grown to enjoy reading for pleasure. Students have the power to choose their own novel with few limitations on the novel guidelines, which gives them ownership of their own learning. They are beginning to make connections between the novel characters and their own lives and are willingly trading in screen time for reading time. With limited resources at home, many of my students do not have the financial capabilities to purchase their own books to read. And because of the varied levels of reading, it could take students several weeks to months to finish reading a novel, and the library is not always conducive to extensive time frames for students to keep a book. By having an updated classroom library that they can pursue through with real and relevant choices, I will be able to continue to nurture their growing passion for the written word while helping to enhance literacy for all students, including my ELL students and those with literacy gaps. They are remarkable young women and men!
