My urban students are rarely tasked with making something from scratch. My school has seven sections of environmental science and we would like to incorporate a design project which tasks them with making the fastest solar powered car from standard materials. The goal of this project is to incorporate how to optimize photo voltaic cells as an engineering project within a unit on alternative energy sources. Due to budget constraints much of the learning activities my students have are indoor and theoretical in nature. I would like to take what they learn and give them a chance to apply it and actually build something and then improve on it after they have built it. They are unfamiliar with a true design process and I would like to introduce them to not only researching and then creating a design but then building, analyzing and improving on the design to create something unique to them.
