Velcro and laminating film seem like such simple items but to the students in my autism classroom, they are the world! These everyday tools make everyday communication easier for my students. Velcro and laminating film allow us to create durable communication tools. The students in my classroom often begin their communication journey using a low-tech/no-tech communication system: PECS (The Picture Exchange Communication System). This highly effective evidence-based practice requires Velcro and laminating film to enable to visual tools to stand up to the elements of food, art supplies, outside weather, etc as my students take their communication books with them EVERYWHERE! But communication doesn't stop there! There are also several receptive language tasks that my students engage in daily such as answering visual comprehension questions to a text they've just read or following a locker routine sequence. Communication is all around my students and we, as staff, want to ensure they have long-lasting tools to ensure effective communication and engagement.
