As a Physical Education teacher, I am always looking to naturally infuse regular classroom content into what we are already doing in our gym. Space week (recognized internationally) is in October each year. I see a great opportunity to create a recurring experience to teach kids about space while playing a super fun game. With blacklights and stars projected across the gym, I plan to create a sense of awe and excitement as the students engage in an out-of-this-world experience.
Students will be flying through space attacking targets from their space rovers and learning about the "Last Frontier." Large inflatable balls (planets) will be suspended along cables attached to our basketball goals. The "planets" will be attached to pulleys that move along the cables. The students take aim at the planet, striking it with an asteroid or comet to force it to move to its rightful place in the solar system. The team to move its planet into the correct orbital path first is the winner. I am asking for seven sets of comet balls for this project.
Safety is a number one priority in the gym. Students will be sitting on scooters (space rovers) during this activity as the lights will be turned off in the gym. I look forward to seeing this game in action. Thank you for helping to make this idea into a reality.
