One 2005 study concluded that kids who are allowed to fidget during class learn more quickly than those who are not. Karen Pine with the University of Hertfordshire says that "if teachers encouraged more fidgeting in class they might find children actually learn more." This project supports the idea that fidgeting helps increase focus for students with ADHD, Autism, and Learning Disabilities. Students will be able to use various fidgets or seating options during class instruction or individual work to increase their focus on the task at hand. The items I am requesting for this project include sound muffling earmuffs to help students with sound sensitivity. The earmuffs will help block out sound and increase their focus on the task at hand. In addition, I am requesting various objects that students can use in their hands to fidget. These fidgets include stretchy balls, tangles, soothing marble fidget toys, and wood fidget puzzles. Students also benefit from being able to wiggle in their seat. I am also requesting balance balls as a seating option for my classroom. Offering flexible seating choices will help students focus on their instruction. Moving increases student alertness and the items in this project will do just that!
