As part of the new science scope and sequence, students are required to understand the many ideas and concepts from all areas of science. I love doing hands-on activities, but my students are 11 year old children and have a tendency to lose things. Supplying my students with a small notebook to record observations and track data would be a blessing to keep in our classroom. In these journals they would be able to chronicle all of their trials, errors and discoveries, and allow them to express their ideas and summarize what they have learned in class. Students are usually more successful academically when they are part of the learning process. Student-centered descriptive journals are a tool that I find effective for the science curriculum. With your help, I hope to provide a Science Observation Journal for each student in my class. This will be a place to record their field studies data and discoveries and an outlet for their expression. The Science Notebook is a priceless tool that chronicles the learning process and allows a new means of communication.
