The addition of this requested Gauss Magnetic Field meter and EMF RF meter detectors will allow my students to measure real data that exists in and around the school. We can, not only discuss the exposure issues in theory, but also create real data that can be seen and measured. This will drive home the real life implications of the content surrounding the Electromagnetic Spectrum, and thus make this a more pivotal learning opportunity. For example, if we can measure the wifi radiation that exists throughout our campus I can task the students to engineer solutions which we can test. As science teachers looking towards the new NGSS integrated standards materials like these are going to be essential in teaching students to learn in a 21st century climate. The days of learning from books are gone, and there needs to be an ability to bring the content to the students first hand. There needs to be a phenomenon that catches their attention. This device will allow me to catch their attention by showing them the virtually invisible radiation around them. As a result, the tool will peak their interest, cause them to be more invested, and allow them to research, create, and engineer solutions. This simple tool opens a large door into chemistry.
