  • Teamwork Makes the Dream Work!

    Funded May 24, 2024

My students utilize the new table daily. They love breaking into groups and being able to move the table apart to create separate groups. They were shocked when they entered the room and saw the table on the first day! The table helps allow the students to collaborate in a large group, and then break apart into smaller working groups. The communication that occurs in the larger groups and smaller groups is overwhelming! They are so excited to talk and share their thoughts. Even my introverted students will wait to share when the group breaks apart to form a smaller less intimidating group. I have witnessed my students coming out of their shells to collaborate in a positive manner. Thank you so much for all of your help in making this happen!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Adams

  • Creating Tinkerers & Thinkers

    Funded Mar 23, 2023

Thank you so much for your contribution to my project. My students were overjoyed when they opened the boxes and the Lego coding supplies were inside! It has brought my introverted students out because they genuinely enjoy this.

Lego coding has a beautiful way of allowing the children to problem solve, communicate, risk-take, and learn from mistakes without the students even knowing they are learning! Coding is in every aspect of life now, so allowing the students to have as many opportunities to interact with both coding and robotics gives them an advantage.

Following our receipt of the materials, the students are going to join the Lego First League to be able to competitively work with these kits and knowledge. Thank you so much for allowing my students the opportunity to grow and be changemakers!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Adams

  • Building Our Future With STEM

    Funded Dec 2, 2020

Who knew STEM and ELA could intertwine to create such an awesome learning experience!! As we are learning about transformations through a concept-based unit, we have created narratives that allow for characters to go through a transformation themselves or transform the world around them. After these narratives were written, they transformed the written word into video games!! They were so motivated to write when they were given their final project information. Their jaws dropped when they realized they could create video games with ELA!

Writing is only the first step in using these STEM resources! The Bloxels sets can be integrated into any content area which is wonderful since I teach gifted! There is no limit to how these kits can be used!

Our next endeavor will include using these STEM resources to transform the way we think about Social Science. They will have to create a national park based on learning about Teddy Roosevelt. The opportunities are endless! It has energized both myself as a teacher and my students!”

  • Needing Space to Grow

    Funded Mar 21, 2018

Thank you so much for your generous donation to help fund my project. The desks have really allowed my students the option of independent learning versus collaboration all the time. The students have continuously bragged on how much they love the new desks! They are able to work in an area that suits them and their learning style.

The students were so excited when I first open the desk boxes. They wanted to put them to use immediately. I had to put them together, so I told them to hold the enthusiasm for another day. We use flexible seating in my classroom, so this was a way to be more flexible not only how we sit, but how to think about our own learning. The students are thinking about their personal goals, how to obtain them, and interpersonal relationships in class in the best learning environments.

Your generosity has sparked a higher thinking process in my students. They are metacognitively thinking about their thinking. My gifted students are amazing and they are so thankful for companies such as Horace Mann that values their learning and growing in their learning.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Adams

  • Sharing Our Identity to Educate Others with Digital Storytelling

    Funded Mar 27, 2018

Thank you so much for your contribution to our students learning and future. The Ipads that were bought with your generous contribution allow my students to let their voices be heard. They have been able to create presentations and become leaders to educate their teachers on their identity as a gifted learner in their classroom. They are able to use green screens to create videos that enhance their authentic audiences.

The students were so excited to be able to use the new Ipads. We only had three Ipads and it was very time consuming to be able to pass them around to be able to create presentations. The students have online portfolios that they are able to add more in depth, quality work because we now have an adequate amount of Ipads to work with independently. Being able to synergize and work independently on the Ipads has really made a difference in their leadership in the classroom.

The Ipads really allow the students to come out of their shells. They love to present what they know on their portfolios for their student led conferences. I allow the students to go outside to video or speak about out daily work and that really builds confidence for my shy presenters. I am very thankful for your charitable contribution to the future leaders and learners of tomorrow.”

  • Invent to Learn With Makerspace

    Funded Aug 15, 2017

I am so grateful for your generosity for my classroom. It has been an amazing part of my curriculum. My gifted students are so excited to make, create, and communicate all of their wonderful ideas and inventions. Adding these pieces to my makerspace has really allowed my students to envision a goal and begin with the end in mind. We are a Leader in Me school and I am able to incorporate the seven habits with our design process. The students love our creative days and are overly joyed to have more to build and program. Once again, you are a true blessing!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Adams

The goal of Invent to Learn: Makerspace Science is to get my third through fifth grade students making, tinkering, and engineering science projects in our gifted classroom. You may be asking what a Makerspace is? It is a basically a place for people to make things that are substantial, shareable, and personally meaningful to them. The goal of my project is to have students explore science concepts through the process of actually working to make something. The Lego base plates are going to be used to create a Lego wall to create the unimaginable! When they build they will have to see things in a different perspective to post to a wall as opposed to building up from the ground. I want them to create theories, use trial and error, and make creations. There is no better way to learn than to do. There is a lot of research supporting the concept of “project-based learning”. This concept means creating projects that are substantial, shareable, and personally meaningful for the student. Makerspaces allow young learners to get in there, to “play” and learn, to create and test theories, and then have a finished product. The students will use the Lil Bits Electronic Gizmos to test theories and learn to be risk takers in their learning. In my classroom, they are free of judgment and allowed to try new things and take risks without being laughed at for their ideas. The combination of tools and supplies will allow my students to “get their hands dirty” and to actually learn while creating. Students will reinforce science skills while having fun learning and creating. The students will use the K'NEX Robotics to code their creations' movements. They will go through the engineering design process to test ideas through coding their creations.
