The class set of balance ball chairs will increase student learning and improve classroom behavior. I currently have 24 students in my classroom with 11 of them diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. Currently, I am having to stop instruction to redirect attention and focus an average of 4-5 times in a 45 minute class period. Students have a difficult time focusing for that long of a time period. We also pause instruction time for "brain breaks" 2-3 times a day to give the students enough movement so they may increase their focus and attention for an upcoming activity. Because of all the instruction time missed and interrupted by off task behaviors, more small group reteaching has to take place in order to ensure the students have learned the skills they missed in the initial lesson.
Kids are meant to wiggle and move and the balance ball chairs will allow them to do just that while learning in the classroom. Students with ADD need movement to keep their brains engaged and alert. When a child sits on the ball, they have to be constantly moving in order to maintain their balance. By doing this, they are redirecting their natural movement and energy in a positive manner.
With our school district's budget being cut by $4.1 million, our classroom budgets are minimal and growing smaller each year. Students with special needs who don't qualify for special education services, often times don't receive the tools they need to be the best they can be in the classroom. With the help of generous donors, my students can overcome an obstacle in their learning and maximize their potential in the classroom.
