The Build-A-Whale project would be a part of my larger marine biology unit in my Health Science & Biotechnology 2 class. Students would build a life size model of a whale that is big enough to walk through. This lesson would focus heavily on collaboration and team building, in addition to the marine mammal content I would cover. Students will create this whale at the end of the year and provide the opportunity for other students at our school to experience this fun opportunity and explore our whale during the often stressful time of finals. This will be a teaching experience for my students, and they will create tools to educate the visiting students as they explore our whale. Students will create a life size whale, experiencing problem solving, collaboration, and creative expression. Students will fulfill NGSS standards (HS-LS2) through building a model, understanding relationships in the marine ecosystem, and educating other students about human impact on the environment. I first learned about this project while observing a veteran teacher before obtaining my teaching credential. I recently found the instructions in my Project WILD book.
