  • Books Take Students on Historical Adventures

    Thank you for generously donating these books to my students. It is so difficult to find sources for them to read in Louisiana History, to practice those analytical skills in preparation for state assessments. These stories have added a personalized account of events that happened in the time periods we are discussing. Photographed, we were working on an assignments reading about Huey P Long, and creating a foldable to help them to digest the material. This story brought to life the "Kingfish" and made him more a a real person that they cared to learn about.

    I have also been able to use these texts as extra credit assignments for struggling students. They would read a short story, make connections with the class textbook, and create a storyboard to illustrate comprehension of the subject.

    In my own little specialized pocket of the education world (Louisiana History), these books have been a tremendous asset to my instruction and my students' success.”

  • Discover and Research History with Additional Chromebooks

    Thank you for donating the additional resources that we needed in our classroom. My students are able to investigate and research in class using their Chromebooks, and now that we have a total of 20, each student has a Chromebook to themselves or sharing with one other student. Prior to this recent donation, I had 3-4 students crowded around once Chromebook. Today, for example they are researching for the Louisiana from A-Z books that will be a major grade for them and then donated to elementary schools for their enjoyment. We would not be able to utilize class time to complete this academic and philanthropic project without your generous donation. Thank you for helping to make this classroom more technology based, aiding my students in becoming navigators of their own education, and helping us to keep instruction relevant in the 21st century.”

  • Discover and Research History with Chromebooks

    Thank you for your generous donation that funded my Chromebooks project. Since receiving the Chromebooks, students have been able to research topics we are discussing in the classroom. They recently submitted electronic assignments and were able to learn about new online tools that they previously did not have access too. Students who are typically hard to motivate were excited to work with our new technology and completed their assignments with pride.

These Chromebooks will offer my middle school students a variety of ways to learn history that will increase their success in the classroom, as well as teach them important research and communication skills that they will carry with them into the future. Middle school students love technology. They are excited when they get the opportunity to go to the computer lab or see the laptop carts come into the classroom. Unfortunately, this technology is extremely expensive, limiting the students' access to these resources. By donating to my project you will be allowing my students to work with a partner or in small groups to research topics we are discussing to gain a deeper understanding of the material. They will also be able to design presentations in Google Docs to present to the class. These presentations will also enhance their communication skills as they build self confidence speaking in front of their peers. When students visually and orally present what they researched they increase their retention of the material and also offer a different approach for their classmates. It will also allow for differentiation of content for students with special needs. For example, students can have the computer read assignments and passages to them. Students with learning disabilities can take notes on the Chromebook and use programs to enhance the page size, in addition to the benefits listed above.
