  • We Use Technology To Grow and Move!

    Funded Dec 31, 2018

We introduced the robotic Dash "Smart Robots for Curious Minds"

to the students today. They were very interested in how Dash worked and what Dash was able to do. When the Teacher turned on the robot the students said "come here" and Dash moved toward them.

It was interesting to note the positive social interactions and higher level of questioning that occurred with Dash. The students wanted to know the mechanics of Dash and are thinking of projects to create.

We also introduced the LEGO education series which provides booklets with various projects. Today the students looked at the accompanying work books and started choosing which items they want to build.

The joy and inquisitiveness these items elicited from the class was wonderful. It provided the introduction to Robotics in a very positive way.”

  • Protecting Ourselves Against the Elements With Warm Clothing!

    Funded Dec 31, 2018

    Good day Ms Failla

Your generosity to our school community is appreciated by all.

When the temperature was below freezing and a student came to school in a sweater everyone noted. I was so pleased to be able to provide a warm coat. This student's Parent had a coat on lay a way, but could not afford to buy it. When we spoke with the Mother she was so grateful that her son was not cold. This student wore the coat yesterday and today and is still smiling.

Two young ladies who live in shelters and have minimal clothing both were able to wear the jeans provided by you in our order. They were happy and smiling.

Our school has many needs, but knowing no one will be cold is a major consideration for us. You did a tremendous service for our students.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. C

  • Getting Organized for the School Year!

    Funded Nov 13, 2018

I am appreciative of the organizations that demonstrate support for students, Teachers and the entire learning process.

Organizing my room and making sure I have everything in the appropriate place creates an atmosphere conducive to working.

My paper clips/glue sticks and note pads are in the colorful and washable pencil pouches. The blue binders are lined up with paperwork and marked with the name of the file. The requested tote bag now holds my computer and papers I need to take home. I used the bag the day it arrived during our first snow storm of the season. I am happy to report the computer and papers stayed dry.

Enjoy the holiday season with a very happy and fruitful New Year!”

  • Helping our Community with a Refrigerator!

    Funded Sep 7, 2018

Our heartfelt thank you from the entire Dr Horan community for our WONDERFUL new Refrigerator. The students were excited when the Refrigerator was delivered to the school and it was wheeled into the Culinary Arts room.

We appreciate having a Refrigerator that does not leak and keeps the milk. eggs and baking products cold. It is also cost effective to buy dairy foods in bulk now that there is a reliable appliance.

It has easy to reach shelving so our Special Needs students are able to access items. The items in the photos show the stages of creating "cake pops" with icing to sell in the school store. We do not have to worry that milk will spoil or the bakery goods will not be fresh, because the Refrigerator is large enough to contain grocery store and cooking items.

The revenue from the "cake pops" and cookies/cakes/cupcakes

will be used to supplement needed resources for our families who have limited resources. Therefore, the Refrigerator has many purposes as it allows us to provide for our entire school community regardless of their housing or home situation.

To the organizations and donors who contributed we recognize the value of this gift to our school.

    Have a wonderful year.”

  • Clothing for Warmth and Protection Against the COLD!

    Funded Sep 13, 2018

A heartfelt thank you from our students for the wonderful warm clothing. The packages arrived this week and as I opened them student I thought of each boy and girl receiving the items.

As I handed each item to the students and they opened the bags the responses ranged from "this is for me?" "I get to keep this and take it home?" "This is new and no one wore it before?"

I realized they so seldom receive new jackets/shirts/pants. The girls all remarked on the beautiful colors of red and pink and how soft the jackets and shirts felt.

Everyone modeled the clothing and asked to have their photos taken. When I said only a few were being shown on line they wanted the photos to keep. Most of the clothing were tried on and worn home.

The excitement in my room was comparable to opening presents at

    Christmas.

You all did a really "great service" to our school community. As the students wrote the thank you notes they stated "these are the people who bought our clothes."

Have a wonderful year filled with joy.”

  • Clothing is the Armor to Survive the Realities of Life

    Funded Feb 12, 2018

Thank you once again for your generosity. When we called specific students to receive and try on clothing we were not sure of their reactions. However, once the students saw the boxes labeled from Amazon and the clothing with the price tags attached they started laughing and smiling.

Our students do not receive brand new clothing in their sizes on a regular basis. They went through each box with a friend and discussed which color or size would be best for them.

It was a "true shopping" experience and they felt their opinions were valued as to what looked flattering. We called the Parents to ask permission to provide clothing to their children. The gratitude from the families was amazing with some Parents saying over and over thank you thank you.

Some staff members told me they were bringing in their own children's clothing for students who had nothing to wear. That is why you never know how many lives you touch when you do an act of kindness.

To our wonderful clothing donors, you all serve a bring round of applause. Know that you made many teen age students feel valued.”

  • "Warmth and Care" creating a Clear Vision for our Students

    Funded May 2, 2017

Sometimes the event within the event is the success. When the students came into the library and saw the eyeglasses arrayed on the table they all ran over to pick out their pair. This was prior to receiving the eye test by the Optician. These students are teenagers and knew they could not see as well as they could if they had prescription eyeglasses. However, since the opportunity never presented itself they had no choice as to wearing or not wearing eyeglasses. The enthusiasm was amazing as the group assisted each other in picking out frames by color and fit. Almost all of the students tested for vision required prescription eyeglasses. The eyeglasses will be arriving shortly and every student has asked when they are arriving. They also wanted to know if they get to "keep them" to wear at home or if they are "only for school."

All of your full hearts worked together to create a precious event for our students. Much joy and warmth to you and your families.”

  • WOW! Look at My Art Project Scanned on My All in One Printer

    Funded Dec 30, 2014

My students are so excited about having a 3 in one colored printer in class. When the class heard their work being printed, they ran over to watch their printer and wait for their completed products.

The classes are able to scan their art work into the printer, and then show their peers what they created. It is with a sense of pride and ownership they explain the steps. We are creating art projects work, and immediately able to reproduce them for the rest of the class by sending the work from the computer to the printer in color or black/white.

The 3 in one printer has created a focal point for peer to peer interaction, and allowed the students to present their work in a coherent manner. Once the work is scanned into the computer it can be enlarged and details can be shown and discussed. This has become a technology tool that enlivened the creative and teaching process. The students all want to print or scan their work and present it.”

  • Wow! My Neighborhood Looks Great in Living Color

    Funded Oct 17, 2014

Thank you, Thank you! We are having so much fun creating with our art supplies. When the boxes arrived in the class room everyone wanted to be the student to open the supplies. As we took each item out of the carton the students took turns holding them and opening the colored pencils, rulers, paper and other art supplies. The general comments were " are these for us?""when can we use them, and what are we making?"

When you look at the photos that were uploaded you can view how the resources were used by the students. We took a community walk and photographed our neighborhood surrounding the school. The class drew impressions of buildings and details they saw on their walk. They utilized the drawing paper, rules, colored pencils and everything else that we had in the supply cabinet. With the photographs and drawings we created community collages. The students were able to boost their learning by interpreting what they see everyday in their school area and create an art project.

I boosted my teaching by going cross curriculum from art to literacy to communication skills. My students can now look at their collages and write/discuss what each group created. The entire process brought the students and staff closer together enhanced the learning process.”

  • Wow! I REALLY Needed That Computer!

    Funded Feb 24, 2014

THANKS TO VANESSA, CATHY, NANCY, AT&T FOUNDATION AND ANONYMOUS DONOR FOR OPENING YOUR HEARTS TO BUY MY STUDENTS THEIR WONDERFUL COMPUTER.

I told the classes that I work with to expect a wonderful surprise. When the computer came the students watched as I opened the box. They all started yelling with joy. These are High School Students and they were especially happy to have the Windows 8 operating system. The students asked who bought it for them. They were surprised that people outside of their school community would want to give them a present of a computer for their collective use.

We are all enjoying the bright colorful pictures projected onto our Smart Board.

The classes are also doing more peer to peer work on the computer because they are very excited to be able to work with new technology. My students

with motor and sensory disabilities are able to actually sit at the computer and assist with co-teaching (peer to peer) because the computer is so easy to use and to manipulate.

There has been a tremendous boost in accessibility for the students to on line educational formats and programs. The first thing they do when they come into the classroom now is look and touch the computer to make sure it is on and ready for them to use.

This has exceeded my expectations for use in the classroom as the students have taken ownership of the computer as a special classroom resource.”

We are a Special Education inner city High School that is vocationally oriented. We prepare our students for their futures by providing hands on work experience. They interact socially and vocationally with others and are mentored in an informal manner. This allows them to rectify inappropriate speech and behavior patterns through role models. We work in a Food Pantry twice a week where we package and stock shelves while assisting the clients with their shopping needs. The boys actually are interested in coming to school on work days because they feel needed by the clients at the Food Pantry. They are able to conceptualize their place in the world while learning "real" life skills. We also do school wide shopping for our staff at a local Department store once a week. Many of the activities are functional aspects of jobs related to the culinary field. Reading a job description about work in a grocery store is vastly different then doing and learning tasks in the actual work place.
