We are a Special Education inner city High School that is vocationally oriented. We prepare our students for their futures by providing hands on work experience. They interact socially and vocationally with others and are mentored in an informal manner. This allows them to rectify inappropriate speech and behavior patterns through role models. We work in a Food Pantry twice a week where we package and stock shelves while assisting the clients with their shopping needs. The boys actually are interested in coming to school on work days because they feel needed by the clients at the Food Pantry. They are able to conceptualize their place in the world while learning "real" life skills. We also do school wide shopping for our staff at a local Department store once a week. Many of the activities are functional aspects of jobs related to the culinary field. Reading a job description about work in a grocery store is vastly different then doing and learning tasks in the actual work place.
