With so much rigor in our early primary grades, we want students to learn early on to be have a voice in their own learning. If you are a little wiggly, sit on a bouncy chair, if too much noise makes you frustrated, pick a quiet corner with a triangle chair and clipboard, prefer writing while lying down? No problem! Grab a cushion and get to work. No two children are the same so why should we require them all to work in the same way? This year we have a huge focus on the social and emotional growth of our students and these seating options will facilitate exploration in self discovery, learning, and communication! Many of my students come from backgrounds where they have experienced trauma and loss. While school is a safe space for them, we are still challenged at times to keep our focus. I have read numerous articles about flexible seating with this age group and it is very promising. I just think in a world filled with so many difficult choices and realities, this one is simple. Kids need to move, they need choices, and they need to learn in an environment set up for them to succeed. This project will be one HUGE step toward that goal. Thank you for your consideration.
