Kindergartners are unique in their reading needs, because lower level books are not available in public libraries to check out. They have to be purchased in leveled sets specific to pre- and lower level readers. Because of this, even families that regularly purchase books for their children do not have the necessary books and materials at home to help their Kindergarten children be successful. As a new Kindergarten teacher, I do not yet have a classroom library built up for students to check books out from our classroom. Supplying these lower level books will allow my students to practice reading nightly with their parents. We practice reading strategies and decoding skills daily in our classroom. Lower level books are small, and difficult to share with a large group. A document camera will allow the books to be projected on our board so that all students can interact with the text.
