I have transitioned from the traditional method of teaching where a teacher would impart knowledge TO the students. I am now focused on a more inquiry-based approach where my students are asking the important questions and researching or experimenting to find the answers. In order to facilitate this type of learning and collaboration, I have had to rethink my classroom design. Traditional desks in rows are no longer working. In order to collaborate, my students need space to move and spread out comfortably. My goal is to remove about half of my desks, giving my students the ability to choose where and how to work that best fits their needs. As a result of removing their desks, my students still need a place to keep their materials organized and within easy access. The storage bins would be a perfect solution without taking up too much valuable space. Each student will have their own drawer to keep their materials in. Since my classroom no longer has a desk for every student, my goal is to have my students work where they are most comfortable. To facilitate this, I'd like the pillows so my students can rest their backs comfortably and still get work done while using one of the lap desks that I am requesting. I do have some long tables for collaborative work, but would like to give my students the option of ottoman seating for comfort and to work on proper posture. They tip the other traditional chairs that I have and fall over onto the floor, presenting a safety concern, so I would like to replace some of the chairs.
