Imagine the excitement that ripples through the classroom when any one of the students stands and proclaims “I did it!” These are words every educator longs to hear and will dedicate hours of time in an effort to create experiences and an atmosphere that foster this success. One of the most common ways children feel success and pride in their work is through writing. Children can express themselves no matter what their level of achievement is. Their masterpieces range from a simple drawing of themselves without words to a detailed drawing with a simple sentence to express their ideas. The addition of a writing center will allow for an organized, self-pacing place in our classroom for my students to gather. It would be used for specified activities during our center time each day, such as composing a note, writing a personal experience narrative or creating a list or labeling a picture, all of which are state standards we teach. In addition to children completing tasks that are required, students will utilize the writing center to spark creativity and provide an opportunity for every child to shine at their current ability level. In this day and age of technology, many children rely on automation for accuracy and neatness. Teaching children to write is an important skill in addition to the opportunity to express themselves as individuals.
