I teach special education in the middle grades of a NYC transfer school in one of the most underfunded districts in the Bronx. All of my students have been retained at least one year, several have been retained three, even four times. In addition to being behind academically, the majority of my students are going through or have experienced some form of trauma in their lives (i.e.: homelessness, foster care, jail, etc.) I strive to make our classroom a safe space for closing the gap of their sporadic schooling. This is a hard task to accomplish in an underfunded school without the support of generous donors like yourself, and my students and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
