Today's world is all about collaboration and communication. In any meeting in the outside world participants sit either at a table or in a circle of chairs to have productive discussions. And yet in my world language classroom my students still sit in individual classroom desks that separate them physically from their peers. It is as if they are on their own little island...how does that encourage them to communicate? I want my students to use their language skills to talk, joke, laugh, build and create together, rather than sit alone. My students need tables so they can work collaboratively on written tasks in the classroom. On other days, we will push the tables to the exterior and focus on oral communication with the chairs in a circle. Having tables and chairs will allow me the freedom to organize my classroom to fit the need for each day's activity.
